| Introduction: Mycotoxins are toxic compounds produced by the secondary metabolism of toxic moulds in the Aspergillus, Penicillium and Fusarium genera occurring in food commodities and foodstuffs. The range and potency of mycotoxins make this group of naturally occurring toxins an ongoing animal health hazard and a constant risk for contamination of the food supply. Mycotoxicoses are diseases caused by exposure to foods or feeds contaminated with mycotoxins. Mycotoxins exhibit a variety of biological effects in animals, such as liver and kidney toxicity, central nervous system effects or estrogenic effects. | The economic reforms in maize marketing and trade policies implemented during the 1990s have been highly controversial, and there remains a lack of solid empirical investigation on the impacts of these reforms on national food security, price stability and rural income growth. This study aims to provide a detailed evidence-based analysis of the impacts of maize marketing and trade policies on smallholder agricultural production growth, access to food by consumers, and other important national policy objectives. These insights from Zambia can hopefully move forward the continuing debate in the region on how maize marketing and trade policies should be structured in the future. |

| Among consumers there is a growing demand for food products with a natural nutritional-physiological advantage over comparable conventional products. As part of an EU funded project, ALP is examining the possible impact of processing on nutritionally valuable milk components, using the example of conjugated linoleic acids (CLA). | This research focuses on the performance in the Magoye ripper in maize and cotton production in Eastern and Southern Provinces during the 2004/2005 productions year. Findings include the following: In maize production, the ripper enabled higher yields compared to traditional animal ploughing, by increasing the effectiveness of nitrogen fertilizer applications, resulting in net profits per hectare of ZK575,800 in Eastern Province and ZK93,800 in Southern Province; In cotton, the input applications and size of fields were the most important determinants of yield, and the ripper had no significant individual effect. | With the risk of the drought in the agricultural production areas of Zambia, conservation farming (CF) was introduced as a set of technologies that can improve productivity while reducing plant stress due to moisture constraints. Under animal traction, CF involves using the Magoye ripper to minimize soil disturbance in land preparation and to help improve water conservation, thus enhancing farmers’ land and labor productivity. | O objetivo deste estudo foi caracterizar o mercado consumidor de alimentos orgânicos em Belo Horizonte-MG, incluindo o perfil socioeconômico e o comportamento dos consumidores, sua percepção e seu conhecimento sobre alimentos orgânicos, além das principais motivações e limitações em relação ao consumo desses produtos. Uma pesquisa descritiva direta e estruturada (survey) foi realizada com 400 consumidores de alimentos orgânicos, por meio da aplicação de questionários semiestruturados. | Es wird über Ergebnisse zur Mehlqualität von Weizen berichtet, die mit einem neu entwickelten optimierten Backtest im Forschungsring e.V. Darmstadt im Rahmen eines BÖL-Projektes erzielt wurden. Der Test ermittelt das Potential einer Sorte unter optimierten Bedingungen (Knetzeit). Die Ergebnisse belegen, dass die untersuchten Sorten für hohe Backvolumina >660 ml/100g Mehl (Type 550) weniger Kleber benötigten als bisher angenommen. Anhand der gängigen Bewertungsmaßstäbe wie Kleber-und Proteinkonzen-tration konnte das tatsächliche Backpotential der Mehle nicht vorhergesagt werden. |

| Ziel ist es, ein einheitliches System zur Beurteilung von Handelsprodukten, die als landwirtschaftliche Betriebsmittel, technische Hilfsstoffe, Futtermittelzusatzstoffe und Reinigungsmittel in Deutschland bei der Erzeugung von Öko-Produkten eingesetzt werden, zu schaffen. Positiv beurteilte Handelsprodukte sollen in Form von gedruckten Handelsproduktlisten veröffentlicht und zusätzlich in einer internetbasierten Datenbank gelistet werden. Mit standardisierten und eindeutigen Vorgaben für die Zulassung von Handelsprodukten wird für mehr Transparenz und Klarheit bei allen Marktbeteiligten gesorgt. Ein einheitliches System trägt außerdem dazu bei, bisher existierende Wettbewerbsverzerrungen und Unsicherheiten bei der Beurteilung von Handelsprodukten abzubauen. |

| Oberstes Ziel des Projektes war eine Verbesserung der Qualitätssicherung in der ökologischen Lebensmittelwirtschaft. Durch regelmäßige und risikoorientierte Probenziehung von Obst und Gemüse im Naturkosthandel konnten mögliche Pestizid-Belastungen aufgespürt, Ursachen recherchiert und abgestellt werden. Im Vordergrund stand die Analyse auf Pflanzenschutz-, Schädlingsbekämpfungs- und Lagerschutzmittel. Mit Abschluss des Projekts liegt erstmals eine umfangreiche Datensammlung zur Pestizidbelastung von ökologisch erzeugtem Obst und Gemüse vor.
